Barista Express FAQs

Why has my Barista Express suddenly lost pressure?

If your Barista Express has always behaved this way, the first thing to rule out is the coffee itself. Grind size, dose and the freshness of the beans can all have a big effect on the pressure shown while brewing.

A sudden change is different. If a machine that previously brewed normally can no longer build pressure, particularly if the water flow has changed at the same time, there may be a fault inside the machine rather than simply a problem with your espresso setup.

A useful check is whether the machine can still produce normal hot water and steam. That helps narrow down whether the problem is isolated to the coffee side of the machine or is affecting the wider water system.

Why is water going into the drip tray instead of through the group head?

Some water entering the drip tray is completely normal on a Barista Express. The machine releases water there at different points during normal operation.

It becomes a problem when most or all of the water that should be reaching the group head is being diverted into the drip tray instead.

When that happens, it can point to a problem with the part of the machine that controls where the water is being sent. In some cases the cause is a blockage; in others it can be an electrical or control issue affecting how that part is operating.

If the machine is consistently sending water to the drip tray instead of the group head, it is likely to need proper diagnosis rather than repeated cleaning or descale cycles.

Why is there no water coming through my Barista Express group head?

First check the simple things: make sure the water tank is full, seated properly and that the machine is not struggling because of an overdue cleaning cycle.

Then see what the other functions are doing.

If the hot-water outlet and steam wand still work normally but there is little or no water from the group head, the problem is likely to be isolated somewhere within the coffee-water path. If all of the outlets are weak or have stopped, the fault may be affecting a broader part of the water system.

Either way, repeatedly running the pump against little or no flow isn’t something we’d recommend.

Why is my Barista Express leaking around the portafilter?

A small amount of coffee or debris on the rim of the basket can sometimes prevent the portafilter from sealing properly, so it is worth cleaning the basket rim and group head first.

If water continues to escape around the portafilter while brewing, or the leak is getting progressively worse, the sealing surfaces or another part of the group-head assembly may need attention.

The location where the water appears doesn’t always tell you exactly which component has failed, which is why we inspect the complete group-head area rather than simply replacing a seal automatically.

Is my Barista Express worth repairing?

In most cases, yes.

The Barista Express is a machine we repair in large numbers, and many faults that make the machine appear completely unusable are still considerably cheaper to repair than replacing the whole machine.

Age matters less than the overall condition of the machine. A well-kept older Express can still be very worthwhile repairing, whereas extensive water damage or several unrelated faults may change that calculation.

At FMCM, if we can’t repair your machine, we don’t charge you for the repair, so there is very little downside to having it properly investigated before deciding to replace it.
