Expert Sage Oracle Dual Boiler repairs and servicing

The Oracle Dual Boiler uses a much more sophisticated electronic control and touchscreen system than the older Oracle machines, and it can receive software updates over Wi-Fi.

A one-off restart does not necessarily mean there is a hardware failure.

However, repeatedly rebooting during extraction or steaming is not normal.

Make sure the machine is running the latest available software.

If the behaviour is repeatable after updating, there is not really a useful at-home repair to carry out. The problem could involve the software, touchscreen or control electronics, internal power supply or another electrical system causing the machine to restart under load.

The Oracle Dual Boiler automatically grinds, doses and tamps, and its Auto Dial-In system can also adjust the grind setting for the next shot if it decides the previous extraction was not ideal.

So a small automatic change in grind setting can be completely intentional.

What is not normal is a tamp that is repeatedly incomplete, noticeably uneven, or extraction times changing dramatically despite using the same coffee and settings.

First make sure the tamping fan is correctly fitted and that the grinder and outlet are clean.

If the mechanism is clean and correctly assembled but the issue continues consistently, the problem may involve the grinder, tamping mechanism, motorised grind adjustment or the sensors and controls managing the automated process.

First remove the portafilter and check whether water flows through the group head with nothing fitted.

If water flows normally without the portafilter but the espresso only drips, the coffee may simply be too fine. Try a slightly coarser grind.

If there is still no group-head water, make sure the tank is full and fully inserted with the rear latch locked.

Run the group head for around 30 seconds, followed by the hot-water outlet for around 30 seconds, to help prime the system.

The machine can also report that the water tank is empty even when the tank contains water if the tank is not fully inserted and locked.

If the machine still cannot move water after those checks, avoid repeatedly running it. An internal water-flow, pump, valve or sensing fault will need diagnosis.

The Oracle Dual Boiler uses Auto MilQ to automatically control milk temperature and texture.

If the milk reaches temperature but has very little microfoam, first check that the correct milk type and froth level are selected.

Then clean the steam wand thoroughly.

If the steam tip is completely clear but steam remains weak, the milk consistently fails to aerate or the machine cannot reach the selected temperature, the problem may be further inside the steam system.

The Oracle Dual Boiler has a dedicated stainless-steel steam boiler, valves, temperature sensing and electronic control, so several internal faults can produce similar symptoms.

It is one of Sage’s highest-value domestic machines and contains separate brewing and steam boilers, a heated group head, integrated grinder, automated dosing and tamping, Auto MilQ and sophisticated control electronics.

A fault with one subsystem does not mean the entire machine needs replacing.

Even symptoms such as a boiler not heating, failed steam, inconsistent tamping, water-flow faults or touchscreen problems may ultimately be caused by an individual component.
