Expert Sage Dual Boiler repairs and servicing

If your Dual Boiler is running but no water comes through the group head, first remove the portafilter and check whether water flows normally with nothing fitted.

If water does come through with the portafilter removed, your coffee may simply be ground too fine and choking the machine. Try a slightly coarser grind and test again.

If there is still little or no water with the portafilter removed, check whether steam and hot water are working normally. Make sure the water tank is full and pushed fully into position.

If steam and hot water still work but the group head does not, that is useful information because it suggests the fault may be isolated to the brew-water path rather than the whole machine being unable to move water.

If the water flow has gradually become weaker, run a thorough descale following the machine’s instructions. We recommend using the Sage-specific descaler.

Because the Dual Boiler uses water-level sensing probes, some third-party descaling formulas can interfere with those probes and potentially create additional faults.

If there is still no water afterwards, repeatedly running the pump or further descale cycles is unlikely to fix every possible blockage, valve, pump or flow-related fault.

During normal start-up, the Dual Boiler can make a brief steam-like sound as it heats. As it gets close to temperature, you may also hear a short suction-type noise as the steam safety valve on top of the boiler closes.

Once the machine has reached temperature, there should not be a continuing hissing noise.

Persistent hissing, steam escaping from the rear vents, condensation around the display or water appearing underneath the machine can indicate an internal leak.

The Dual Boiler operates with pressurised hot-water and steam circuits, with a number of connections, seals and probes around the boilers. A small leak can sometimes only become obvious once the machine is hot and under pressure.

If you suspect steam or water is escaping inside the machine, switch it off and unplug it rather than continuing to use it. An internal water or steam leak can eventually affect nearby electronics as well as the component that originally leaked.

If the steam becomes weak or stops completely, first rule out a blocked steam tip.

Allow the machine to cool, then use the small pin on the cleaning tool supplied with the machine to clear the holes in the steam tip.

If necessary, use the spanner section of the cleaning tool to remove the tip, soak and clean it thoroughly, clear the holes and refit it.

If the tip is clear but there is still no steam, particularly if the steam boiler does not appear to be heating, the problem is likely to be further inside the machine.

Possible causes include the steam boiler itself, its heating circuit, valves, sensors or probes, or the electronics controlling that system.

The pressure gauge is useful, but the way the shot is flowing matters too.

If the machine takes too long to build pressure and the coffee is only dripping very slowly, the coffee may simply be ground too fine. Try a slightly coarser grind.

If the pressure stays low and the shot pours through very quickly, the grind may instead be too coarse. Try grinding finer before assuming the machine has a fault.

If you know how to use the supplied cleaning disc or blind basket, check whether the machine can build pressure against it. If it cannot, or if the machine also has weak water flow from the group head or hot-water outlet, the issue may be within the machine rather than the coffee preparation.

If water flow has gradually reduced, run a thorough descale following the machine’s instructions. We recommend using the Sage-specific descaler.

Restrictions, valves, the pump, flow-related components and internal leaks can all affect how quickly the machine moves water and develops pressure.

The Sage Dual Boiler is a relatively high-value machine built around separate brew and steam systems, so a fault in one boiler, valve, pump, sensor, seal or electronic component does not automatically mean the complete machine needs replacing.

Many of the failures we see are individual repairable faults, even where the machine is leaking, no longer heating correctly or has stopped producing water.
