Common problems with the
Sage Dual Boiler

No water through the group head

WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE

Your Dual Boiler switches on and appears to operate normally, but little or no water comes through the group head. The steam wand and hot-water outlet may still work correctly.

SAFE NEXT STEP

Remove the portafilter and check whether water comes through the group head with nothing fitted.

If water flows normally with the portafilter removed, your coffee may simply be ground too fine and choking the machine. Try a slightly coarser grind and test again.

Make sure the water tank is full and pushed fully into position.

If the water flow itself has gradually reduced, run a thorough descale following the machine’s instructions. We recommend using Sage coffee machine descaler.

Because the Dual Boiler uses water-level sensing probes, some third-party descaling formulas can interfere with those probes and potentially create additional faults.

If steam and hot water work but the group head still produces no water, avoid repeatedly running the brew pump for long periods.

HOW WE CAN HELP

When steam and hot water still operate normally, the symptom helps us narrow the fault towards the brew side of the machine.

A blockage, internal valve, pump or another component controlling brew-water flow can all cause similar symptoms. We can test the brew-water path and pressure to establish exactly where the flow is being interrupted.

Steam or water leaking or hissing inside the machine

WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE

You may hear a hissing noise after the machine has reached temperature, see steam escaping from the rear vents, notice condensation around the machine, or find water underneath it.

During normal start-up you may hear a brief steam-like sound, followed later by a short suction-type noise as the steam safety valve on top of the boiler closes. Once the machine is at temperature, there should not be a continuing hiss.

SAFE NEXT STEP

If the machine continues hissing once it is fully up to temperature, or you can see steam or water escaping from inside the machine, switch it off and unplug it.

Allow it to cool fully before moving it.

Do not continue using it simply because the leak appears small. Leaks around a hot, pressurised boiler can worsen and can affect surrounding electrical parts.

HOW WE CAN HELP

The Dual Boiler has multiple pressurised connections, seals, probes and valves around its two heating systems.

The location where water eventually appears does not necessarily tell you where the leak started. We can pressure-test the machine while hot, identify the actual source and inspect nearby components for any secondary damage.

Steam wand weak or not producing steam

WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE

The steam wand may produce very little steam, spit mostly water, take much longer than normal to heat milk or stop producing steam altogether. The brew side of the machine may continue to work normally.

SAFE NEXT STEP

Allow the machine to cool.

Use the small pin on the cleaning tool supplied with the machine to clear each hole in the steam tip.

If necessary, use the spanner section of the tool to remove the tip, soak and clean it thoroughly, clear the holes again and refit it.

If the tip is completely clear but there is still little or no steam, the fault is likely to be further inside the machine.

HOW WE CAN HELP

The Dual Boiler has a dedicated steam boiler, so the coffee side can continue to work even when the steam system has developed a fault.

We can test the steam boiler, heating circuit, valves, sensors and water supply to determine why it is not producing the pressure or temperature expected.

Low pressure or slow pressure build

WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE

Your Dual Boiler may still make coffee, but the pressure gauge rises much more slowly than it used to, never reaches the expected brewing pressure, or the shot behaviour has changed significantly.

SAFE NEXT STEP

If the machine takes too long to build pressure and the coffee is only dripping very slowly, first check whether the coffee is ground too fine. Try a slightly coarser grind.

If the pressure stays low and the shot pours through very quickly, the grind may simply be too coarse. Try grinding finer.

If you know how to use the supplied cleaning disc or blind basket, check whether the machine can build pressure against it. This helps separate a coffee-preparation issue from a machine fault.

If the machine also has unusually weak free-flow from the group head or hot-water outlet, run a thorough descale following the machine’s instructions. We recommend using Sage coffee machine descaler.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Low or slow-building pressure can come from several parts of the Dual Boiler’s water system.

A pump problem is one possibility, but a restriction, valve fault, internal leak or another component can produce very similar behaviour.

We can measure the machine’s actual flow and pressure and diagnose the system rather than replacing the pump based on the gauge alone.

Dual Boiler not heating properly

WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE

The machine may take much longer than normal to reach its set temperature, fail to reach temperature at all, or one side of the machine may work while the other does not.

For example, espresso may still work while the steam boiler remains cold.

SAFE NEXT STEP

Make sure the water tank is full and correctly fitted.

If a descale is due, run a thorough descale following the machine’s instructions. We recommend using Sage coffee machine descaler.

Because the Dual Boiler uses water-level sensing probes, some third-party descaling formulas can interfere with those probes and potentially create additional faults.

Switch the machine off and allow it to cool before restarting it once.

If it repeatedly fails to reach temperature, or you notice hissing, leaking or unusual steam at the same time, stop using it and arrange for it to be inspected.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Because the Dual Boiler has separate brew and steam heating systems, a heating problem can be isolated to one boiler or involve the sensors, protection devices or electronics controlling it.

We can test each heating circuit independently and establish whether the fault is with the heater, sensor or probe, control electronics or another condition preventing the boiler from operating correctly.
